Marc Yeats is one of the UK’s leading contemporary composers with his works having been performed by the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, Hallé Orchestra, broadcast on BBC Radio 3 and stations across Europe, Asia and Australasia. I’m thrilled to announce that the first of three huge orchestral works created as part of my University of Leeds School of Music WRoCAH funded PhD research into asynchronous composition for orchestras without conductors or orchestral scores, will be premiered in June 2018 with the fabulous Yorkshire Symphony Orchestra with whom I have an exciting collaboration across the life of my PhD. This piece is huge; 5 of each winds and a saxophone quintet (with all the doublings represented), 8 horns, 8 trumpets etc., 2 harps, 5 percussion – it will be the largest orchestra I’ve ever written for, comprising 112-115 independent instrumental parts. The 30 minute work is called ‘the heaven that runs through everything’, a wonderful title inspired by a prize winning poem of the same name, by my dear friend and fabulous writer, Rosie Jackson. The work is dedicated to another dear friend, the composer Gordon Crosse as a gift to celebrate his 80th birthday later this year. The piece will be premiered alongside Mahler’s 5th Symphony. The Sum Of The Parts: Building a game-changing methodology for composing and performing conductor-less, scoreless, asynchronous music for orchestra.
Total asynchronous music for orchestra is conductor-less and scoreless with musicians performing simultaneously independent material at different speeds. Without the conductor, the composer forms a uniquely direct relationship with the musicians, enabling the composition of music that is tailored for each individual orchestral voice with new possibilities in writing dense, multi-tempi, multi-layered music that redefines current orchestral practice and rebalances expressive rigour, structural coherence and flux in complex orchestral music. My research will test and build new methodologies and repertoire in this undeveloped area of composition (see my relationship with The Yorkshire Symphony Orchestra, above).
Asynchronous composition: My current interests in composition involve creating fluid music that simultaneously brings together fully notated musical lines in differing tempi, fixed against time code, that enable performers to reference their relative positions during performance. This asynchronous compositional approach explores the relationships between control and flexibility, as well as virtuosity and structural cohesion, resulting in performances that are always iterations of my compositional intention. They also produce a slightly ‘out of focus image’ that whilst being recognisable, shifts in its material contextual relationships, yielding results that are always similar but slightly different as each iteration becomes a fixed rendition of the piece in its own right. As such, my practice has developed through an interest in delivering complex musical structures without a conductor, in part, through giving players the freedom to approach technically challenging ensemble music within an achievable, understandable, flexible and expressive time code performance format. In this context I have found that time code supported flexibility allows me to reach a satisfactory compromise between my desire for exact structural control and what is humanly possible without a conductor, to achieve a desirable musical outcome with minimal structural drift that fulfils my creative intentions.

SATSYMPH compose ‘context-aware soundworlds’ – located high quality contemporary soundscape experiences outside in the real world triggered by GPS (satellite) signals. These ‘immersive soundworlds’ (or you can think of them as ‘virtual auditoria’) can be invested with contemporary music content, contemporary music/word fusions, poetry, heritage interpretive content, or with any desired audio content.
